I am in total agreement with your editorial position and can understand perhaps why some pepole might not agree. I am a paramedic and can personally attest to the value of a trauma center. Indiana has unfortunately lagged behind many other states when it comes to emergency medical services but this at least is a progressive step forward. Trauma centers are expensive, they often serve the uninsurred and the poor and do not make money. What is important to all is that they do save lives regardless of the ability to pay. A good trauma center needs volume which the Calumet area has. A trauma center, paramedic, fireman or whoever is only as good as their skills. The only way to good skills is through doing things over and over again. That is what makes a medical doctor a good specialist, the more proceedures the better you become.

Hopefully, most people will never need a trauma center but should that need arise, they will be most appreciative. I've seen it many times over and the cost of saving a human life due to trauma cannot be measured in dollars and cents. I wish everone in Indiana had a trauma
center within 35 miles either by helecopter or ground ambulance. By the way, the 35 minutes is the new Indiana mandated trauma center rule.
