  1. No you do not get "just as good of service." Portage firefighters/paramedics are crossed trained. In other words, in order to be a firefighter you have to be a paramedic. An EMT has no training in life saving, all they do is blood pressure checks and IV's. They are not trained to do anything close to what paramedics do. EMT's cannot save a life, whereas that is exactly what paramedics are trained for - trauma and ALS (Advanced Life Support). There are plenty of ways for Portage to save money, the fire department is not one of them.

  2. Actually life at ISP (which is where he'll be going) is not like you see on TV, not even close. I have seen those shows, and there is no comparison. If you remember the guy, don't know if I can mention his name, and his step dad who brutally tortured and murdered that young girl in Valpo a long time ago, he's doing fine behind the walls, walking around like he's at day care. For those ppl with no conscious or morals, life goes on. If McCowan is as dumb as he seems, he will mouth off or do something stupid to the wrong ppl, and then he will be begging to go to protective custody, where even in there his safety is not guaranteed. Life at ISP can be rough, but those shows on TV, I would classify as dangerous places to be.

Too bad they are not going for the death penalty. The difference between life in prison and the death penalty. Of course, we all know that the MAJORITY who are sentenced to the death never receive it. Life in prison means he's in general population, can go to school, work, out for rec. free cable, visit and hug his loved ones, etc.. The death penalty means he is locked in a cell for 23 hours a day to think about what he has done. His visit are behind a glass, thru a phone. I don't see why ppl are so against the death penalty, considering it rarely takes place,. Being locked in a cell for 23 hours a day, that is a far worse punishment. Then he can talk to the walls about how innocent he was when he shot her through the throat.

  6. Totally agree. The people running these shelters, either one, have no clue how to care for the animals, two, have vets on staff that do not care about the well being of the animal and thirdly, have staff that does not care. I applaud anyone who speaks up for the rights of these defenseless animals who cannot speak for themselves. This shelter, as well as many others, have not had anyone running them properly in years and years. You want to do right by the innocent animals, get people in their that actually care and know how to run a shelter. And when you do have a concerned employee who speaks out, they lose their job. Most, if not all of the shelters are run by people who have no business being there. Example, that confiscation of dogs in Chesterton where over half the dogs were killed by the shelter, they were not mean or vicious, actually they were very lovable. This is supposed to be a "No kill shelter". Really, because there is no such thing. Education is the first step. Also, since there is no such thing as a no kill shelter, I personally feel that a law should be put into effect that NO ONE can breed their dog, horse, or cat for the next five years. Think how many lives would be saved. It just makes me sick when people want to breed for profit, or because they think it would be cool to have the off spring of their animals. It is not cool, because for every puppy that is brought into this world, another dog is put to death.
One last comment, I think everyone should write Animal Planet about their show "Too cute." Really, what better way to promote idiots wanting to breed their pets. Shame on them for promoting this show. Just think how many people are now going to want to breed their pet and have these "cute" little guys runnning around.

  7. Last year at the grocery store someone knocked my side view mirror off. I had it fixed four days later. But during that time, I had gotten pulled over for "driving too slow," because I was searching for a stray dog. My license does state that I have a restriction, and I have to have side mirror. So I got the mirror fixed as soon as I could, (four days) and now I am up on criminal charges. Yes, driving with a restriction on your license results in criminal charges. Really, does Porter county not have anything better to do. My driving record has thus far been spotless. If this was a cop who was pulled over, would he be facing criminal charges, most definetly not!.

  8. I do not know, nor do I care if this was gang related, but luckily an innocent bystander did not get shot. My solution to Gary and Chicago is to close off a park, invite all gang members and wanna be's, tell them to bring any and all guns and let them have at it. Let's face it the gang members out number the police. No way the police are ever going to stop the violence. Easiest solution, let them have a shoot out.

  9. Matt Soliday - what a joke he is. He does not defend the people he is representing. He tells you one thing, and bam all of a sudden you are behind bars. He will lie to you, not do what he should for you, and sell you out in the end. He works for the county, not for the person he is supposed to be representing. If you are really interested in going to jail, by all means go with Soliday. Also, the newspapers never seem to get the story correct, they do get the police and prosecutors side, but then again, why listen to the person arrested because they already have them convicted. There is more to a story than what is printed and I think the Times should really investigate ALL the facts before they go print what the police and prosecutors want them to print. Not everything is as it would appear (in print). Makes me sick how the papers and public have someone guilty before they even go to trial. P.S. Not everyone in jail should be there, but because of bad advice of counsel, because of believing their attorney is doing what is best for them - surprise - you've been lied to and are now sitting in prison for something you did not do. Yes, I know of a case where all this is true.

  10. Now that all of you have read this article, I can only hope that those that do 50 miles an hour down that road will slow down. This is horse country back there and on occasion a horse will get lose, so stop being in such a hurry and be aware of the kids, horses, dogs, cats in that area. I don't know why most drivers feel the need to fly down that road.
