- As a GCSC teacher (on leave), I agree with some of your thoughts. However, you really have no idea about the reality of the situation. We have tried some of your suggestions. However how do you presume that a seasoned teacher is worse than a "younger" one? We have a perspective on the children that a rookie doesn't. I'm not saying that all veterans are effective but then neither are new teachers which is reflected in the high rates of new teachers leaving the field (MetLife survey found that 29% of teachers were "very or fairly" likely to leave the profession). My school tried to get parents/guardians involved. We provided food, free resources such as books and supplies, transportation to the meetings, and we even raffled off computers from the closed schools. In a school of approx. 480 students, we had a turnout of 18 families and those were our "usual" great parents who are always involved. What are your suggestions to get more parent involvement and how do you think teachers should be evaluated? Test scores exclusively? Should we pay the parents a minimum wage for showing up to meetings? Should non-involvement in your child's education be construed as a form of child neglect subject to a reduction of benefits and/or legal ramifications?
