Let see, This consultant tells us something we already know, that we have a small underutilized airport that maybe can developed by money that another outside investment firm will talk other investors into funding but they will only do this if we give them upwards of a quarter million up front. But lets wait. The first consultant will probably get a additional contingency on any success they have, then the investment firm will take their percentage and the citizens of the region will be left with what?

    Let me tell you. If they are successful the regions will sell its allegedly valuable asset for a lump sum of money. After the current politician steals their share the rest of the lump sum payout will somehow disappear.

    Now we have sold what value we have either as an airport, greenfield site or new casino, and lost whatever control we have of it.

    I do not believe it is the best interests to effectively sell this asset under te illusion that investors from China can somehow develop this site in the BEST INTERESTS OF THE REGION.

    WE OWN IT. DO NOT LET OUR POLITICIANS SELL IT so that they can steel their share of the proceeds now at the expense of what is left for our future generations

  3. Did anyone ever think that the investors interested in Midway may be interested in taking over Gary just to KEEP IT AN UNDERDEVELOPED GREENFIELD. This would keep Gary from ever being a threat to Midway.

    This, I believe is what the City of Chicago did by includng Gary in a miniscule part of the Chicago airport revenue scheme..

  4. $80,000 in OT for one of the richest counties in the United States? Come on, they received millions $$ in local expenditures (Hotels), publicity etc.. Really never heard a complaint from them..

  5. Government cutbacks. A great start. 100's of Millions spent on these demonstrations is considered non-essiential expenditures. But we should shut these demonstration teams down and ACTUALLY save the money, not just make the appearance of saving money. I would rather see the money actually go into the defense budget actually supporting our military mission. Next we have to lay off all NON-ESSENTIAL Government workers. How many of you business types ever had a Non-essiential worker on the payroll. Next congressional term limits just like the President.

    DOWN WITH PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS!!!!!!!!!! Return the government back to the people..Its time to take grass-roots control of our affairs....

  6. Bravo, Now we are talking about the "Big Kahoona" Chicago will not loose that fish but there are bigger fish that compete head on with the 500 lb Gorilla successfully in MANY other markets. And they already operate in the Chicago market. Its time to think outside the box folks. Dont give it away and Don't blow it. Gary airport represents a market that if properly exploited will be one of the most profitable in the country. PS: Yes I know what I am talking about and NO I am not smoking anything

  7. Midway airport was abandoned in the 1960s because the city of Chicago built Ohare. Because the City of Chicago built Ohare they enacted a requirement that anyone operating at Midway additionally pay for and rent a slot (a location) at Ohare weather it used it or not.

    This forced most of the airlines to focus on Ohare and either abandon Midway or operate a token amount of flight from there.

    It was not until a real entrepreneur saw this little used (diamond in the rough) and started Midway Airlines operating basically from the rat infested abandoned corridors of the Midway terminal.

    The vision of that PRIVATE investment group is without a doubt solely responsible for the resurrection of that airport and the redevelopment of the entire surrounding area, that was then a boarded up ghetto, to what is now again a thriving neighborhood.

    No consultants can do that. Not a federal, state or city focus group. Just people with the vision, passion and a political environment that allows all of this top happen..

    Gary you still have that chance.

  8. First thing the airport people have to determine is what Gary Airport wants to be when it grows up. Do we want to focus on Freight, Airline passenger traffic or General Aviation/Corporate traffic. Maybe its best use is top simply plow it under and find another use for this strategical located transportation facility.

    We can not afford the build it they will come philosophy, at least when it comes to local expenditures and its starting to look like the Federal money press is staring to grind to a halt.

    I remember when Gary was dubbed Chicagos' third airport. That was when they were competing against another one of Chicagos' third Airport (AKA Lake Calumet). The problem then is as it stands now. The Lake Cal fiasco was too close (in aviation terms) to Midway and Ohare to operate efficiently. In other words Midway and in fact Gary would of had to shut down if that third airport was ever built resulting in a net loss of one airport..

    I believe that we are all getting a little fed up with more consultants soaking up local tax dollars telling us what we already know.

    Doers anybody really know what a consultant is? Its usually a washed up industry executive, attorney, or a political has been that convinces local controllers of the money that they are they are the only ones that can come up with a plan to save them from themselves. In reality the local politicians are simply passing the buck on their own ineptitude and when the plan fails they simply fire the consultant and deflect the blame on wasting hundred of thousand in CONSULTING FEES with again NO RESULTS.

    WE have local talent in the area that have proven track records and a passion and knowledge of the unique attributes that the Gary airport has and if allowed to develop without concerns over political affiliations or who greases who's pocket or which local contractor or consultant gets their share of the money. We will have a facility that rivals any in the world as far as what it contributes to the community.

    In the long term its not about how many times a third rate airline flies to Florida. Thats small potatoes compared to what it could be if we let the passionate people with the right intentions loose.
