  1. I'm pretty sure this is the definition of selfish. Your son might be the only player on the team if no other parents helped contribute to the program or if the school didn't help financially in some way. A lot of kids playing sports cannot afford everything it takes to play, so the school must help. Again, making comments about something you know nothing about. Don't make comments about how the finances for coaching high school athletics work, unless you have coached a high school sport or are the athletic director.

It's a good thing you're not running the school or a teacher, otherwise we'd have some very lonely misguided children. If a teacher took the approach of only wanting to teach the children who wanted to learn, you'd have a class of about 12, instead of 30 plus.

  2. Nope, you're right, it's not shown a huge increase in elementary enrollment, rivaling many larger school corporations. Or maybe you missed that piece of critical information?

Bottom line is when you cut administrative positions, the school and it's children suffer. The school doesn't have counselors at the middle school, nor does it have an ISS room. Most schools nowadays do. We need more, not less.

  4. The problem with this is that educating young children is not a business. Yes, there must be limitations, but the state has done a good job of seeing that education budgets are slashed. Do you really have any clue what administrators do? Without an assistant superintendent or assistant principals, a school would crash and burn. They are just as valuable as educators. Who do you think handles discipline when your children misbehave? Develops fundraisers? Puts on food drives for the less fortunate people in the neighborhood? Petitions and applies for grants for YOUR children? Come on, stop making asinine comments.

People need to step back, get educated, and then make statements about the situation. Spouting off at the mouth when no real research has been does is craziness. People who vote no to this, are damning their children.

  5. Sounds good. Better yet, replace teachers with boot camp instructors and get those young whipper-snappers into shape!

Maybe if we had a little more respect for educators and what they do, we outsiders wouldn't have such short sided and narrow minded viewpoints.....

  6. So you are perfectly fine with them then being forced to cut programs even though you have a child in the school? Yikes!

People make uneducated assumptions about someone's position without ever knowing anything about it. If the school system was forced to cut their assistant principals, good luck ever scheduling a meeting with the actual principal! From what I hear, they don't have school counselors or an ISS teacher, basic positions other big schools have. If you cut AP, who will handle school discipline or social issues? The principals have had so much dumped on their plate with the new legislation, I doubt there are enough hours in the day to get all of that done plus basic day to day school operations. Again though, this is coming from someone who has relatives in the system and knows something about it.

If you want to blame someone, don't blame the schools, teachers, administration, etc. Take a stand and stop voting in politicians who have no clue about education, i.e. Pence. They are slamming ridiculous policies onto schools that have very little to do with education. Know the source, and attack who rightfully deserves it.

  7. I'll admit that both my parents are teachers, not at Union, so I may be a little biased.

So your child is an 'A' student yet, for some unknown reason, you had a conversation with a four year educated teacher who I'm sure has been teaching for many years, that they think it's ok if kids get F's? Why would they say that to you if your child is an 'A' student? And why would they just freely offer up that information? This makes no sense. Even if for some unknown reason that they did make a comment similar to this, it was probably in the context of "If the parents don't care, how are teachers supposed to get them too?" Teachers are not parents, and at some point, parents have to start taking responsibility with their children and stop pointing fingers.

Do you realize that teachers have about 150-175 kids per day they have to deal with? That's a lot of parents. I'm sure they get back to you as soon as they can. I'm not sure what extra mile you are talking about, but most teachers, my parents included, stay after school until about 5 or later to get all the grading and new state requirements completed. I defy you to be around 150-175 12-18 year old's all day. Good luck.

But, in the end, you're probably right. We should all vote no to this referendum because we will show all of the HORRIBLE teachers and GREEDY administrators what's what. It won't affect the kids at all cutting all of these extra curricular activities...........geez

  8. Hahaha, do you not want the kids to have homework? Maybe teachers are pushing the kids TOO hard? God forbid they want the children to reach their maximum potential. On second thought, how about they set the bar so low that everyone can easily jump over it, and then jump right into the real world where it's much easier. Sounds good to me.

What results does Union have to show you? Oh, maybe that they have been an 'A' rated school/district for a long time? They employee one of the hardest working staffs in northwest Indiana? Maybe that parents routinely bring their sons or daughters from other districts to Union just because they are told it helps maximize their child's development better than bigger schools in the area? Take your son or daughter to Pierce or River Forest. Then you'll come running back.
