  1. I have been a manager since 1979 for several companies which ultimately became Arcelormittal USA. I have a double B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, I also have an MBA and I have worked in several departments as a maintenance shift manager, electrical turn foreman, project engineer, section manager, maintenance manager and Division Manager. Cold Mill, Hot Mills, Casters, BOF, #7/H3/H4/.....C&D furnaces, I have seen many a break down.
    I don't quite understand the union bashing, these are men and women of a skilled trade that have a firm knowledge of how to operate machinery required to produce flat rolled steel sheet. Mechanics/Electricians know how to keep the steel rolling and when the mill is down, they have to spring into action to get the mill back up. NOBODY makes money unless the different units are producing.
    I understand there is downtime and sure there are instances of sleeping or catching up on the Sunday night game. I think the mentality has changed from several years ago, unions are not interested in destroying their bread and butter, instead they are often consulted on how to best fix a major breakdown or troubleshoot an electrical problem.
    You union bashers need to go elsewhere to display your displeasure for organized labor. We may disagree about economics and bottom line but when we need qualified maintenance/Operators, we need to be able to rely on our experienced union employees!

  2. The Union submitted a good proposal that the company is likely to accept. It has not been accepted as of right now.

  3. Indiana Harbor East hasn't turned a profit in 13 Quarters, thats over three years for you Union guys that don't pay attention. Indiana Harbor West, Cleveland and Burns Harbor have been floating you guys since we were forced to join your company in 06'. #7 Blast Furnace is the only profitable operation on that side of the canal, everything else is destined for the scrap pile since Lakshmi has to pay taxes on abandoned buildings.

  4. The issue is largely held up at Local 1010 (Old Inland Steel) or Indiana Harbor East. They have the biggest and most expensive legacy costs because they are part of the old retirement plan since they didn't file bankruptcy ten years ago. They also stand to lose the most since they are a financial thorn in the side of the company losing millions of dollars each month. I am sure Tom Hargrove is the only Union President that voted for a strike and he will not get one since everyone is waiting on Local 1010 to take the concessionary vote and move along. There will be changes there one way or another, either through concessions or loss of jobs through shops, redundent operations and unprofitable units will be closed for good. But hey....be sure to protect those retiree's!

  5. They are much closer than you would think. Still hung up on the language of the two tiered wage system and healthcare. A buyout of the profit sharing is real possibility too.

  7. You people are delusional if you think Lakshmi is going to shut down the mills on the Lake. There will be significant job losses as he shuts down redundent operations eg...Finishing Mills, Shops on the East side of IHW, Shops at Burns Harbor etc....The union will have to eat some crow too, whether it be eliminating benefits for new hires or giving up a two tier wage system; they will feel some pain.
