Darned! (?) (I can think of a better word here) Autocorrect!
They deserve the benefits - THAT WE ALL ALL ENTITLED TO. Like all of us, this is better for society than when they are focused only on work with no relief.
BUT......BUT.......
The ACLU??? Honestly Mantis, the ACLU is more conservative than ANYTHING you are - or anything that you will EVER BE SUGGESTING in this comment section.
The bottom line for this letter, is that this is not a measure of the facts. They are clear and without bias or judgment. It what it is - and the reporting allows the reader to judge for themselves.
I have NEVER read a letter at this site that cuts to the heart of the matter like this one does. I am completely brown away by it.
I hope the new format will continue to carry this letter to the people a little longer. If it is does not, you must re-submit it. Please Mr. Feaster do it again!
My disgust with this kind of comment is over the absolute demand that the right wing must continually insist that nobody is required to do anything but to simply let the social wheels of our society grind on because you or anyone else are not entitled to the successful outcome you may thing you deserve.
The ambition I'm referring to is the ambition to make it a goal of our society to achieve positive outcomes. THAT'S what really matters and that is how we evaluate how successful we are as a society. And that's why opportunity alone is not always enough.
The idea that a utopian society led to Stalin's Russia and Mao's China could not be further from the truth. These are two of the most DYSTOPIAN societies in world history and they have never been anything resembling a utopia.
And you use this phoney tall tale to remind us in America to not hope for much??
Get an education you ridiculous fool.
For the vast majority of inmates, this is not a life sentence. For these folks there is life after incarceration. It is in the best interest of society to assist those who need help in getting it.
This is what being a just and fair society is all about. It is not about piling on to those who have done wrong indiscriminately.
All of us have done wrong - some more than others - but nobody is without guilt of some wrong in their life.
We all learn from mistakes and that's part of becoming a better person. It only antagonizes those who are repaying their debt to society by creating inhumane conditions for them to deal with in what SHOULD be a productive learning experience.
I know that some on both sides of this issue will consider this to be comical. But as a society our way of life demands the respect required to face these individuals and make them own up to their crimes as well as providing the means needed to correct them.
This is why America is better than every place else.
