  1. The year was 1978 or 1977 and I was a 6th grader in Munster. At a slumber party, one of the girls showed us other girls what the girl "does" during sex. We were about 11 to 12 years old. She used a banana as her teaching tool. She showed us missionary, from behind, and giving oral. We were from several different churches and knew each other from school. I was completely clueless at the time and complained to my parents about the girl. My mom said: that girl's family goes to that crazy baptist church in Hammond, stay away from her. From then on, I pictured the church in Hammond as some big orgy place. I guess I wasn't far from the truth!

  2. I'm not sure what is the lesser of the two evils: elected township assessors or appointed assessors. Either way, Indiana townships are redundant, unnecessary and colossal waste of our tax dollars. Eliminate the townships and centralize property assessments with the county assessor. This way, it's one office, not 5 or 6. Then the performance of the county assessor can be more accurately evaluated.

  3. NWIMOMTO2: What you say about the "GENERAL" fund is true: this fund does not pay for the pool, football field, etc. Those projects are paid from Capital Project Funds and DEBT SERVICE funds. DEBT SERVICE is paid from a general obligation property tax pledge, also know as a full faith and credit property tax pledge. This means that if the debt service tax levy (which has NO limit) was not adequate enough to repay the bonds issued to fund the Natatorium, the football field and other building projects undertaken by the school, then the School Town of Munster would be legally compelled to pay the owners of the bonds ANY and ALL money available to the school, including general fund money.

On another note, I think Supt. Sopko doesn't understand school funding. He's said numerous times that the pool and football field are not paid from the general fund. Yes, he's right, but there still is a full-faith and credit property tax being levied to repay the bonds. What is the school's TOTAL property tax levy? And what percentage is for DEBT SERVICE? And how does Munster's total tax levy, the percentage for the General Fund, the percentage for Debt Service, the percentage for short-term leases, the percentage for maintenance, etc. all compare to other districts in the state? Stop telling me that the school gets and lowest amount of state funding. That has nothing to do with what the total tax burden on a Munster Resident is and how much of the tax burden is paying for the different components of running the schools and financing its capital projects.

  4. Officer Ghrist is the Town of Munster's best police officer! He deserves any and all recognition he receives. He is the most helpful, approachable, responsible, and committed law enforcement agent I've ever met. He is such an asset to our police force. Keep up the good work Officer Ghrist, you are much beloved by our community.

  5. The numbers cited in this article indicated only one thing: the actual number of incidents increased from 2011 to 2012. Can the Times or the City of Merrillville make the numbers meaningful and give these statistics on a per capita basis? And then compare Merrillville's numbers to all the other communities in Lake County? And then give us the number of police man hours on a per capita basis and then compare that number to each of the other communities in Lake County. Then, compare Merrillville statistics with statewide, regional, and national averages? And to really give meaning: a comparison of Merrillville's statistics with other cities around the country that share Merrillville's demographics. If none of this information was presented to Merrillville's city government, then on what basis can the police chief determine he needs more officers?

I keep a couple of car lengths between me and car in front of me and pay attention. If you're driving a tax-payer funded vehicle I expect you to do the same Ms. County Coroner.
