  1. These changes were taking place long before President Daniels was appointed. For the past few years, PUC has been changing its admissions standards and is now more selective - which has resulted in lower enrollment. They now no longer accept new students who will not have the academic capabilities to be successful in college. Those students need to go to Ivy Tech. Now the difficult part is attracting a more traditional student who has the option of going to IU or Purdue West Lafayette starting with the athletes.

  2. I agree with you Bev on almost all of your points - except the one about it being a money making business. If Purdue Calumet is losing students without graduating them then they are losing money. It is in their best interest to make changes to retain the students and graduate them - that's the only way to stay in business.

  7. This story really touched me because the same thing happened to me. I attended a Catholic elementary school on Chicago's south side and was bullied so badly that I actually walked out of the school. I didn't go far though and my absence was noticed by one of the teachers who called my mother. Unfortunately my mother's response was for me to simply "ignore" them, which never works and because my parents did nothing, I just took it. I think they didn't really understand how horrible "kids" can be and also violent. Years later when I became a parent and my daughter experienced a couple of "bullying" incidents (not just simple teasing), she told me and then we went to the school. I expected them to handle it and they did. Zero tolerance really needs to mean ZERO tolerance or else you will get more incidences of victim retaliation. I was just a good kid who did what I was told but inside I HATED those kids and used to fantasize about something bad happening to them. As a parent, I made sure that my daughter understood that bullying was not acceptable and to inform an adult (her teacher first, then me so I could follow up ) if it ever happened. If her family has talked to the school, then the parents and there are still no results - it's time to go to the police and also hire an attorney. I hate to see some of these frivolous lawsuits but some people only respond when they take a hit to the wallet. Maybe the bullies' parents can't control their kids' behaviors, but someone needs to.
