I am not saying that she would be bad at this job and this is nothing against her, but isn't sad that they "fired" a volunteer that did this job for 5 years, for free? I understand that someone needs to be there full time, but 2 volunteers maybe? Anyone think of that solution? Snyder is ruining his standing with the workers of Portage, including the three unions that elected him. He is fixing the city's financial problems on the backs of the workers. Al Ekdahl is the wife of Deb Ekdahl who the Mayor said publicly he would do anything to get her out of office on the school board. Since his handpicked candidates, Lorenz and the other two clowns he stuck against her lost by wide margins, he is going to take it out on her husband. You are a joke Jimmy (if I can use Deb's phrase). 1112 days until he is out of office!

This is nothing more than politics on the Mayor's part. He hates Deb Ekdahl so I guess her husband isn't allow to volunteer for the city anymore. This is just plain sad. I could understand if he was doing a bad job, but from what this article sounds like, he was doing a good job. I'll bet any one that this unaffordable paid position will be filled by a Snyder crony. What happened to eliminating positions to lower operating costs? 3 years in counting!

Please, someone explain to me how this is Joyce Russell's problem for reporting on this. It is not like she just writes whatever she wants, she covers City and Township Government and she doesn't get to pick what she covers. It is not like, "ooh, Snyder did something bad so I have to report it!"

Being as Mike Berta has been talking about retiring for 3 years, how was he ran out? Granted, it was bad for Portage and good for Valpo that he left, but Portage automatically named Dr. Frataccia, who has been described as one of the top educational minds in the state. Mike Berta took the job at Valpo because he didn't want to see education suffer because of the poor decisions of this appointed board. How many superintendents have there been at Valpo, 4 or 5 in the last 5 years? I've lost count. All of this is just political posturing to keep control of this large budget in the hands of the Republicans on the City Council and the Mayor, who said he would support an elected board if that is what the people want. Why not put it to a vote, are they afraid they would lose? I would say yes!

I hope by North you are not referring to the Portage schools. PTS does not have a budget crisis. PTS is not in debt up to our eyeballs. PTS's board does not overlook their schools spending money on a scoreboard and then say "we messed up". PTS has had only three superintendents in the past 15 years. PTS puts the children first, not political motivations. Portage High School is an A school as are 6 other schools and the district. PTS is an "exemplary school district" according to the state. Guess what, PTS has an elected school board, as do the other top 10 districts in the state!
