  1. I have worked at a few charter schools... and am working in one now. Why did I switch schools? I was told by a principal to allow a student to cheat on an ISTEP... and of course, that charter school has a good grade. I LEFT that charter school. I'm now working in a charter school with a lousy grade, but I'm staying there, because the administration has integrity. The principal is by far THE BEST principal I've ever worked with (and I've worked with 7 over the years). I took a pay cut... I work with very challenging children... and sometimes even more challenging parents.... so why do I stay? Integrity. Lousy grade or not, our school does things by the book. We accept all children... regardless of ability. Our school has high transience. We will take a group of kids, work with them, get them "at or above" grade level, then 1/2 of them move away. The following school year, the next grade has the 1/2 of the kids we worked so hard with, and then the other 1/2 of kids who came from traditional schools, but are 2,3, or more grade levels behind. So now, in essence, we have to teach several different grades all in one class. Throw in the child who falls asleep in class, because the television isn't being turned off at night. Throw in the child who throws temper tantrums, because there's not been discipline. Throw in the child who won't sit still long enough to participate in a 10 minute lesson. Throw in a child who can't keep their hands to themselves. Throw in the child who's never been properly socialized and defecates in their pants without indicating the need to use the restroom. Throw in the child that will take tools for their "hands-on projects," and destroy them or hurt other children with them. And yes, that's all in one classroom. Throw in the child who was born with drugs in their system and has extreme learning deficits as a result. Throw in the child who comes late to school 3-4 times/week, missing the majority of the language arts lesson. Throw in the child who is absent at least 1 time/week, and then parents wonder why their child is falling behind... do the math (1 time/week = a whole grade level behind by the time a child reaches 4th grade). Then there are the rest of the kids who are trying their best to learn in spite of the chaos their peers bring to the classroom. I don't know many adults who would put up with a work environment like that, and yet, that is what we do in charter schools.
