- As a volunteer of almost twenty years, I have assisted: Fire, EMS, and PD with many duties. I know how much crews can be understaffed. What the many don't know is how much the city looses in the EMS billing. I would love to see a full staff on the streets for all the departments, but when you have a collection rate of (example) seventy to seventy-two percenct, it makes it awful hard to justify the expense. The county has yet to institute a county income tax. The Hobart Mayor and Council, tried to do everything in their power to fight the institution of the" flood fee", to save the residents money. So many vehicles for parks, public works, sewer, etc. have been purchased used, to save money. Why shouldn't they look at all corners of the books, to see where they can save our money. Yes, it is more than just an issue of money. It is jobs, and careers. If you want to talk about lack of raises, guess what helps contribute to lack of funds. I don't like the thought either, but it is an area that needs to be looked at. If you can't grasp that concept, feel free to come up with cost cutting. City Hall has a suggestion box.
