  1. I guarantee you that it's not Hanlon's fault. It was edited out so it would fit on the front page of the paper.

  2. I'm afraid the photo that ran with the story is a file photo taken long ago, probably not long after Courtney was on the show. They showed her on TV during the Biggest Loser finale, and they only showed her from about the waist up, very briefly. It was obvious she had re-gained some of the weight. She needs to drop a few more pounds before appearing on the Subway commercials, that's for sure. I believe owning a Yogurt store probably doesn't help with temptations. Good luck to Courtney.

  3. Sorry Chris, must remain anonymous. Don't you think the state has anything to do with the $1 million deficit?
If you think our school system is so bad, move back to Illinois.

  4. These people need to just forget about it. The Valpo School System has been and will continue to be one of the best in the state - better than that 96 percent figure mentioned in this article. I graduated in 1985 and we were named a four-star school back then, and the school has been excellent in the area of academics, arts and athletics ever since then. We don't need transplanted Valparaiso people like Cornett and Christopher Pupillo coming in here and trying to get things changed, just like we didn't need Andrew Melin coming in here trying to change things. He's the one who screwed up everything, now we've got true Valpo people back in place and everything will be fine.

  6. Valparaiso is not a FAILING school district. Geez. It's been a bump in the road but name one school district in NW Indiana that hasn't had problems. If you had a choice of public schools, intelligent people would still choose to send their kids to Valpo.

  7. Great choices. I guess the appointed school board can do something right.

  8. Pretty sad that The Times didn't have this story in Sunday's paper. The fire at Doelling's was well before deadline and it was all over social media early Saturday evening. Doelling's is one of the oldest businesses in town, and The Times missed the story.

  9. Travel baseball, AAU basketball and a necessary year-round commitment to one sport have ruined "town ball" leagues and also the notion of a three-sport high school athlete. AAU basketball may have been the first, a pre-cursor to the travel baseball teams. I grew up in Valpo, and we had a morning instructional league run by two great teachers. Then we had the night-time leagues with the park department or Valpo Americans. Those leagues still exist, but they only exist for the purpose of fielding All-Star teams to compete in the Little League and Cal Ripken state tournaments. The thing that bothers me the most is the leagues start in April while school is still in session and the weather is awful. By the time school ends, the season is just about over. While the kids chosen to the "All-Star" teams continue to play, the majority of kids are left without a team to play on because the season ends by the end of June. So we have several fields in our town that remain empty during the good weather months, while kids have to hustle from school to the ball field during the crappy weather months of April and May. This leaves the non-All-Star kids with nothing to do, and they will end up hating baseball by the time they are 10. That is a shame. The Park league used to go until ninth grade, and maybe it still does but there are very few teams. And by 6th grade, your kid better pick a sport unless he's Jerrick Suiter or Jeff Samardzija. Because the coaches will want you training for their sport year-round. Things change, but it's not always for the better.
