".... indications that football may be less dangerous than we often think..." Indications? The author cites one long-term study. How did that become a plural?
And to compare football of the 1950s to football today is fallacious. High school players today are stronger, better conditioned, and wear protective equipment that encourages them to hit much harder. That caveat should not have been buried at the end of the article. Coaches are going to show this article to parent after parent whenever they want their kid back in the game when the kid shouldn't be playing. The "assault on football" is not happening because players sometimes get injured. It's because coaches put kids on the field who shouldn't be out there. The author comes very close to encouraging coaches to saying that it's OK for coaches to do this when he points out that in the 1950s, "players with milder injuries were likely to continue playing."
