Um... yeah... because they ate them.
The proposed legislation against contraceptives involves companies such as Hobby Lobby, not just typical "religious" organizations or companies. One person's religiously fueled stance on women's rights should not set the standard for their company.
It is also always so fascinating to hear the male point of view on this issue. They, of course, are not the one to end up carrying, bearing, and in some cases, caring for the child for the rest of their lives. The same men who are against abortion are against the medication that would prevent unwanted pregnancies... and then when their are lower-income families who need assistance due to the birth of a child they were not prepared to have, these same legislators do not want to provide them with government assistance to care for the child.
Call me crazy, but the entire agenda seems to be a slow measure to simply let the "poor" die off... as many earlier societies did. Sounds like a grand future for this country.
