- Oh I think that Merrillville will be Gary in another 5 years... Between shootings at the mall during the holidays and the general state of disrepair. I remember growing up in Merrillville in the early 90's and hanging out at Hidden Lake etc, now I feel less safe near 61st than I did in Iraq. Face the facts Gary is ruined and it is dragging Merrillville down with it.
