I've been coaching softball since 1969 and the bottom line is this...at this level, you put the best girls on the field in the positions the give you the best chance to win. Take the "freshman/senior" designation off the roster and play your best 9, period. Has this girl been the "Ace" all year long or was the coach looking past this game (since they handled them in the regular season)? If he did, shame on the coach for not taking care of the business at hand. The only game you can win is the one you play today.
I don't care if the girl throws Miller 64s, if she's your best pitcher, you pitch her, and then you pitch her again the next game. That's how softball is played. But when the pitcher was ineffective, the coach should have replaced her. It sounds like there are any number of pitchers able to step in. Do you fault the pitcher for errors in the field? No, but the coach has to recognize a runaway train before it becomes a trainwreck.

PS - If a parent ever came to me and threatened to pull his daughter from my team, he wouldn't finish the sentence before I had her replaced.
