The Illiana Expressway has been a long time coming. This expressway was originally proposed many years ago and was supposed to continue east of I-65 and connect with I-94 near LaPorte.This reliever route, to siphon traffic off U.S. 30 and the Borman Expressway, is needed. Anyone who drives on either of those two highways knows how busy they can get. Has anyone measured the volume of traffic on I-65 recently? I know from experience I-65 is at or near its capacity during the morning and evening rush hours. The traffic volume resembles the condition years ago when an emergency lane had to be added to alleviate the dangerous situation that traveling I-65 had become.
If this expressway is built as proposed, considering the time it takes to get the ball rolling on a project of this size in this area (possibly years), the traffic on I-65 will only get heavier. The only thing this will accomplish is shifting the current bottlenecks from U.S. 30 and the Borman Expressway to I-65, its interchange with the Borman, and the Borman itself east of I-65. This expressway should only be built as originally proposed. To continue east of I-65 to I-94 is the only route that will truly eliminate the traffic congestion. This situation needs to be revisited by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
