Something you need to be aware of; 13% of the population is responsible for 53% of the firearm realted homicides. Guess which 13% that is?
Of all the firearm homocides in America, just over 3% are committed with a long gun. Long
gun as in hunting rifles, shotguns and lastly so called assault rifles. Gangs don't use "assault rifles", they use handguns!
If you research real assault rifles you might be surprised at the statistics, but I bet that you didn't even know you could buy them?
Firearm violence is a CULTURAL ISSUE if you exclude the deranged. So, using your mentality, maybe we should start outlawing groups with violent cultures?
Lastly, we have failed to outlaw poverty, drugs, illegal immigration and ignorance, what makes you think that we will have any success outlawing any kind of firearm?
31,300 firearm related suicides! We need to pass a law outlawing suicides. Right!
Check out if mandatory sentencing laws adding 5 years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime are being enforced? You failed to mention D.C. and
Chicago. Theyget their guns from Virginia and Indiana, but then explain why Virginiaand NWI don't have similar rates. Oh, I forgot Gary.
Japan does not allow public ownerhip of guns which explains their low rates. But check out Isreal, a country in a constant state of war with
the arab world and they somehow manage to keep their children safe in school.
It must be terrible to be so afraid and distrustful of society as a whole that you want
to subvert our CONSTITUTION to allay your fears. You need to pull your head out and start looking at where the real problems lie or at the least move to Japan so you
don't have to worry about gun violence.
And if any of you think that if ordered the locals wouldn't come knock on your door for your guns, you are wrong. I spoke to a person yesterday that is close to many
police officers and he quesses that at least 75% will do what they are told to do despite the danger confiscation presents to their safety. Do you think that the officers standing behind Obama everytime he is on tv wouldn't like to disarm you?
Every firearm manufactured or legally imported into the United States since 1968 has been registered! First, to a licensed gun dealer from the factory or importer, then to a person
who has passed a background check from the gun shop. If a weapon is used in the commission of a crime by a person to whom it was not registered, backtrack who the last
legal owner of the weapon was and charge them with aiding and abetting. That will stop
all the straw purchases. I have yet to see any statistics that quantify the number of firearms bought and sold at gun shows with their use in the commission of crimes. And if anyone thinks that firearms are not being illegally smuggled
into the country, I have a toll bridge in Brooklyn that you can buy. We can't stop illegal aliens or drugs, what makes you think that we are stopping illegal firearms?
I have read enough studies about the enforcement of current laws to understand that we first have to enforce laws on the books before passing any more. It is time that we stopped
passing laws to make the public feel good and start taking some real action to facilitate safety.
Speaking of safety; we really do need a fully trained and armed security person in each of our school buildings. Other countries have done this and you don't read about their children being murdered in class. I don't want teachers or administrators to be armed, their jobs are to prepare our children for the global "rat race". Can't afford the manpower, take foriegn aid
from Pakistan, or Egypt or any number of countries that will never enact anything close to
our kind of government.
Once again the Times has failed to do appropriate research and apply logic before writting an editorial, or maybe it is just an anti-gun mentality. Of course, maybe Rich James wrote this editorial which would explain everything.

real assault weapons they used for their war with England for nealy 40 years?
The war on drugs has failed so badly because our government has failed to control its borders and so states are legalizing drugs. The war on poverty
has failed because our government has failed to control outsourcing of jobs, illegal imports and illegal immigration. Now, people want our government to outlaw guns! Some people are living in a never-never land and it isn't me.
Address the cultural issues that are leading to our movement towards a 3 rd. world country and you will address the violence issues of which there are many beyond just firearm homicides.
Shouldn't papers print the facts and educate?
This article contains no facts, just biased opinion and what is worse, opinion
expressed using the deaths of 20 innocent children to justify that opinion.
If Indiana is really the source for all the guns used in Chicago homicides,
then why doesn't Indiana have the same gun related homicide statistics?
James is trying to control the political process in Lake County and everyone
needs to ask what is his motivation? Could it be some power trip since he has free
and nearly unlimited access to print anything he wants in the paper?
Print the facts Mr. James if you can !Facts such as there have been more gun homicides in
Chicago since the Afgan war began then soldiers killed there. This in a country that
has no firearm laws and where everybody has access to real "assault weapons". Care to
explain that fact Mr. James? It is not the guns, but the people !
The media could do so much to make America a better country if they would only
print the facts.
deaths. Guns don't kill, people do.
Bobsr, you are the poster child for increased functional illiteracy and decreased cognitive ability. We are a nation under attack from all directions by liberals, terrorists and our own government. Take your thoughts to their logical conclusion and we should all be in rubber
walled rooms with no windows and locked doors.
correct. Hitler selectively divided the country and turned each demographic against the others.
He used the people's own ignorance and pettiness against them.
I also believe that research will disclose that communism also begins by disarming the people.
I would love to see the statistics on how often so called assault weapons are usen in
Arizona, just like I would in Chicago and Illinois?
Let's go one step further and look up the statistics on how often legally owned real assault rifles have been used in the commission of a crime? Bobsr, you know that some states allow the legal ownership of real assault rifles?
.223 was specially modified to circumvent the Conn. laws concerning so called
"assault weapons".
Here you have an affluent, educated, single white woman, a profile that makes me question
what frightened her so much that she purchased such a weapon. If you can address
people's fears, then they would probably not purchase such weapons. The Chicago
Police Chief has come out saying that he wants them banned. You can't buy these
weapons in Chicago and furthermore Chicago doesn't keep homicide statistics on how
many homicides were committed with them. Chicago politicians blame sources outiside
of Chicago for the influx of all types of weapons and this influx for the city's homicide rate. I ask you, if those weapons are coming from outside the city, then how come the cities
that source these weapons don't have similar homicide rates? I served in the military and have never heard of any type of weapon discharging itself. Someone always pulled the trigger. Our founding fathers adopted the 2nd. amendment to give their citizens an ability
to protect themselves from oppressive government. To ensure that we keep our freedoms. There was another letter printed today suggesting that the elementary school came under terrorist attack. Non of you have commented on that letter. Why? Are you all in denial?
