  1. Thank you Mitch, your legacy lives on .... in screwing the northwest corner of the state and the industries (steel and casinos) that pays big tax dollars to the state and supports 1,000's of jobs.

  2. It was the state that got thew ball rolling to give away the land the new private bridge will be built on. How does the state have $100 to give to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that is use a few weekends a year, but they do not have the funds required to rebuild the Cline Ave extension bridge as a public road? I have a hard time believing the tax revenues generated by the speedway which is used a few weekends a year will ever match the tax revenues generated by the businesses whose customers and employees use the Cline Ave extension bridge.
Maybe it the politicians down state do not want our casinos up north to remain successful and generating tax revenues for the region and state? Or are they doing everything they can to hinder the success of the Gary/Chicago International airport? Putting up a toll bridge between Chicago and the airport in Gary when trying to build the airport into Chicago's third major air hub is just one more obstacle the downstate politicians are putting on us.

  3. I just want to know when they are going to finish the trail to the eastern edge of Crown Point. When I moved to that area back in 1994 I was told the federal government grant was there to complete the trail all the way to Stoney Run County Park. Here we are almost 20 years later and there has not been anything in the way of progress in extending the trail even to the I-65 & 231 interchange. Heck I would be happy if they just made it a crush gravel path for now.

  4. I work at one of the local steel mills. I describe the unions as "necessary evils". Without them the companies would take advantage of the workers, but with them the unions take advantage of the workers and the companies.

It is unfortunate that some of the unions think their primary purpose is to protect the poor workers while compromising the better workers' safety and take home pay.

In the shop where I work there are several people many of the other people do not like to work with because they are in constant fear for their own safety when working with them. These workers that compromise the others' safety are more worried about tweeting/texting/talking on their personal cell phones than doing their jobs. This use of their cell phones is a major distraction in a deadly environment where a simply mistake or oversight can cause major harm or even death to the workers. The union protects these people that are obsessed with using their phones while at work instead of working with the company and union brothers to correct this very unsafe practice.
There are also a number of union brothers that feel they do not need to follow set practices and procedures. In many cases this leads to delays in the shop and reduced production numbers and quality. Incentive pay is based on production numbers and if our production is lowered by people not following set practices and procedures it reduces our incentive pay and therefore our take home pay.

There are a number of union brothers looking into exactly what the "right to work" law means for them. Could it provide a way to suspend payments to the union that protects the distracted, lazy, poor workers while putting the other workers' safety at risk and reducing the other workers' incentive/take home pay?

  6. I know the public is focused on air passenger service and they are saying the Gary airport will never be the third Chicago Area airport. What I think many are missing is commercial passenger air is only part of being the third Chicago airport. I believe being the third Chicago airport is going to be more about handling cargo and corporate flights than commercial air service. I think privately that is more what they are focusing for the Gary airport. If they can start getting more of the cargo flights (UPS, FedEX), corporate (Boeing, NIPSCO) and private jets away from O'Hare and Midway the Gary airport can be successful and play the role of the third Chicago airport even if commercial air service is minimal.

  7. So by passing this law they are saying we do not want the trash we create to be our problem. We want to dump our trash elsewhere and make it someone else's problem. Trash should have to be disposed of in the state in came from and it should have to be disposed of in say a 50 or 100 mile radius of where it came from. It's your trash, you should deal with it. Do not dump it on someone else in another state or area making it their problem.

  8. I can understand why someone would like walking along the railroad tracks. In many cases the areas along the tracks are undeveloped and they are good areas to see wildlife & wildflowers and get away from developed neighborhoods with little nature to observe.

As a kid growing up in Schererville we all played by the railroad tracks. We hunted along the tracks, walked the tracks to a pond that we fished at, we picked wild strawberries & harvested wild asparagus along the railroad right of way, we built our "forts" along the railroad tracks. We would run after the cabooses yelling "flares, flares, flares" with the staff in the cabooses often tossing us a couple fusees. As we got older we would hop the trains and ride them one direction, hop off, then hop another train going back towards home.

The mother did nothing wrong allowing her daughter to walk the tracks to/from home. The only mistake was made by the young lady with her headphones in and probably playing too loud.

My heart goes out to this young lady's family and friends.

  9. Where is this 130 acre parcel of land located? It says eats side of the city, but that is a large area. Are they not saying the exact location in an attempt to keep people from opposing this change in zoning?
