Lake Park Ave, Hobart St. Mary Medical Center Cancer Care Center is offering a free six-week Cancer Transitions® class for survivors who are moving from treatment to the post-treatment phase. Cancer Transitions is a program of The Cancer Support Community. It is open to cancer survivors who have been out of active treatment for at least three weeks up to two years. Each class will focus on an important aspect of survivorship including exercise, emotional health and wellbeing, nutrition, medical management beyond cancer and more. Cost: Free. Lake Park Ave., West Entrance, Hobart St. Mary Medical Center will host a free program during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to highlight ways of detecting, treating and beating one of the most common forms of cancer. Join Gastroenterologist Mark Fesenmyer, MD, and Oncologist-Hematologist Eduardo Braun, MD, as they review the symptoms, screening guidelines and treatment options for colorectal cancer. Screening remains an essential tool for detecting colon cancer in its early stages. The Cancer Care Center of St. Mary Medical Center will provide free take-home screening kits for those in attendance (while supplies last). A Lake County master gardener will lead you (and your entire family) in starting and caring for your very own container garden. Community Healthcare System’s dietitians will discuss nutritional value, provide tips and perform a meal demonstration using foods that can be grown in the container garden. City of East Chicago Parks and Recreation will talk about their greenhouse and aqua gardens. Purdue Extension Nutrition and Education will provide informative materials and interactive displays. Refreshments will be served. The Limb Ischemia and Vascular Excellence (L.I.V.E.) program at St. Mary Medical Center specializes in treating vascular conditions in the legs. Join Cardiologist Anas Safadi, MD, as he discusses techniques to open narrowed or blocked arteries and treat limb ischemia, DVT and other debilitating conditions.
