AROUND CAL CITY: Shout out to Mike Giglio for keeping Cal City Plumbing in Cal City

  • Updated

Well, he sold it.

If you’re familiar with Calumet City, you probably know Calumet City Plumbing. The business was started by Frank Giglio and is now run by his son, Mike.

Mike’s business outgrew its location at the end of my block, Freeland Avenue. Mike made a big move and bought the much larger facility that was River Oaks Ford on River Oaks Drive.

That dealership was closed by Ford under a cloud because of some shady dealings by some sales reps.

Anyway, that prime spot on one of the main thoroughfares through Cal City sat empty for several years.

I give credit to Mike Giglio for keeping his business that bears the city’s name, in the city. As you may well know, there are some advantages to moving a business out of Cook County and out of Illinois. And Mike thought about doing just that.

But CC Plumbing stayed in town and a large piece of commercial real estate is again being used.

But what about his former home?

Well, that was bought by the Calumet Memorial Park District. They will use the old CC Plumbing property for its grounds and maintenance equipment, supplies and vehicles.

And the old park facility, the one right across the alley from me? Well, the garage will be turned into a facility for boxing, wrestling, tumbling and other to-be-determined activities

And the land used for vehicles and storage and sundry materials used in grounds keeping? That area will be paved for parking for those involved in the soon to be re-purposed garage facility.

All this seems to be advantageous to all parties, including me since the storage area across the alley from me, besides being home of sundry equipment and materials, was home to sundry creatures, creatures that would not qualify as family pets.

Anyway, a shout out to Mike Giglio, for having faith in Calumet City and to the Park District for looking to expand its operation and activities.

My friend Ed Vockell and I will be running another edition of our Trivia Nite Out for our church, St. Victor. If you haven’t been, try it out. It’s always a good time.

Saturday, 7:30 on September 9, 7:30. Contact me for details.

Thanks for reading.
