2015 Golf SportWagen: VW hatchback with a backpack

Volkswagen adds a new model and more cargo room with the 2015 Golf SportWagen.

Volkswagen expands its seventh-generation Golf Hatchback product line with the 2015 Golf SportWagen.

A glance into the bay behind the rear seat of the Volkswagen (VW) Golf Hatchback reveals 22.8 cubic feet of cargo area. The additional space created by the SportWagen body style increases carrying capacity to 30.2 cu-ft.

Folding the 60/40 split-back second row flat more than doubles SportWagen’s load volume to 66.5 cu-ft compared to 52.7 cu-ft. contained within its hatchback sibling.

Golf SportWagen also features a 24.8-inch rear load height and tailgate opening of nearly 41 inches.

The 5-passenger 2015 VW Golf SportWagen comes in S, SE and SEL trim levels.

All but the base S model come with available 12-way power driver seat, Fender audio system, panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, proximity sensors and six-inch touchscreen display.

Post collision brake system, forward collision warning and park distance control system are part of the SportWagen’s featured safety net.

SportWagen’s power comes from either a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder TSI gasoline engine with 170 horsepower or a 2.0L turbodiesel (TDI) engine that generates 150 hp.

Both engines are managed by a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

Recently, I tested the 2015 VW Golf SportWagen TDI SEL with automatic transmission through the desert southwest where summer temperatures reach 108 degrees daily.

The SportWagen TDI champions the Arizona heat with no drain of power or performance regardless of travel conditions.

Equally stable is the comfort of the well insulated cabin that shuts out the heat for front and rear seat riders with a Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control system.

A cooled glove compartment keeps water bottles at a refreshing level.

Come to cold of winter, Snow Belt dwellers will enjoy standard heated front seats and heated power adjustable outside mirrors.

TDI fuel economy yields 31 miles per gallon in town and 43 mpg on the highway when equipped with a manual transmission. With an automatic, 31/42 mpg is achieved respectively.

My combined fuel economy was 33 mpg during my weeklong test period under extreme heat conditions and with no sacrifice of power accessory use.

Base price for the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen TSI starts at $21,395. Golf SportWagen TDI raises the ante to $24,595.
