Police arrest man at Griffith optical shop for child molesting

Merrillville Police Department detectives arrested a man Monday on felony child molesting charges.

Michael Phililp Lee, of Merrillville, is facing three counts of child molesting as well as a felony battery charge on a person younger than 14.

Lee's age was unavailable as of press time.

After obtaining an arrest warrant, Merrillville police officers arrested Lee at his place of business, Grifflands Optical in Griffith, according to a news release. Lee is listed as president of the independent optical shop on 45th Street, according to the Indiana Secretary of State's office, but is not the sole owner of the eyeglass business.

Police received a report concerning a molestation, conducted an investigation and got the Lake County prosecutor's office to file charges, Merrillville Detective Cmdr. Jeff Rice said.

"It was someone that he knew," Rice said.

Rice said Lee was arrested without incident Monday. He was taken to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point.
