A big name in Italian food in the Chicago Southland has opened its first location in Northwest Indiana.
Carla Bolin, whose family ran the Angelo's restaurants in the south suburbs for many decades, picked up the family business by opening Angelo's Fresh Markets in Flossmoor and Tinley Park in recent years. Now she's opened her third Italian-themed specialty boutique grocery/restaurant in Schererville.
Angelo's Prime at 1542 U.S. 41 says it carries "the best of everything," such as truffle butter, prosciutto, wild caught fish, fresh baked Turano French bread, flavored olive oils, grab-and-go slices of lasagna, homemade dry pastas and homemade Italian meatballs with a three-meat blend of veal, pork and beef. The 2,200-square-foot boutique store has the entire Sartori artisan cheese line, locally raised meats, and homemade raviolis, including braised short rib, squid ink and lobster, artichoke and spinach.
It's one of the few retailers to carry steaks from Meats by Linz, a Calumet City wholesaler that supplies fancy Gold Coast steakhouses like Morton's.
"We're a small boutique market," Bolin said. "You go to Walt's or Strack & Van Til to shop for paper products, vegetables and frozen stuff, and then you come by us to get the good stuff. They have the staples. We have the good meats, Italian cheeses and pasta."
Angelo's Prime purposefully located near the Strack & Van Til and Whole Foods in Schererville and the Meijer in Highland to capture some of the grocery shopping traffic. It also shares a parking lot with the fine-dining Ciao Bella restaurant to draw in fans of Italian food.
The restaurant portion of Angelo's Prime seats about 30 diners, and offers gourmet burgers, a meatball sandwich, a steak sandwich, and "oversized" personal pizzas that are about 2 inches wider than normal.
"I grew up in the restaurant business," Bolin said. "It's in my blood. I'm trying to do the best of both."
Angelo's Prime is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
