SCHERERVILLE | Smoked meat fans will have one fewer Northwest Indiana restaurant to dine at.

Texas-based Dickey's Barbecue Pit has closed its Schererville location.

The fast-casual counter-service barbecue restaurant chain, which originated in Dallas in 1941, had operated a location at 713B Indianapolis Blvd. in a strip mall in front of Big Lots and PetSmart.

Several competing restaurants sprung up close to Dickey's this year, especially after most construction was completed at the Shops on Main shopping center. Bagger Dave's, Tomato Bar, Meatheads, Firehouse Subs, Noodles & Company, Carrabba's Italian Grill, and YoAmazing all opened nearby on Indianapolis Boulevard last year.

More modern takes on barbecue, Bombers BBQ and True BBQ & Whiskey Bar, also both recently opened in neighboring Munster.

Dickey's, which is known for beef brisket, pulled pork, ribs and other hickory-smoked meats, continues to have local restaurants in Highland, Portage and Valparaiso. The Highland location, also on Indianapolis Boulevard, is about 3.7 miles due north, by the Ultra supermarket.
