MERRILLVILLE | The American Red Cross announced Monday the appointment of three new members who represent a cross section of legal, labor and media organizations to the organization’s board of directors.

They will help guide the strategic direction of Red Cross activities in Lake, Newton and Jasper counties. 

Attorney Sharon Stanzione, partner of Johnson & Bell LLC; Joree Richards, business representative and referral agent of IBEW No. 697; and James Muhammad, president/CEO of Lakeshore Public Media will join the board.

Center to host stroke presentation

VALPARAISO | Community members are invited to a free stroke health fair and presentation at Life Care Center of The Willows on May 22. 

The skilled nursing and rehab facility, 1000 Elizabeth Drive, is teaming with Methodist Hospitals for the educational event in honor of Stroke Awareness Month.

The fair will run from 4 – 6 p.m. and will feature stroke education, several non-invasive screenings, giveaways and refreshments.

Sherry Mosier, a stroke certified registered nurse and stroke coordinator, will conduct a presentation about strokes. The presentation will start at 6 p.m. 

A limited number of vouchers for cholesterol screenings will be available for presentation attendees. Vouchers can be redeemed any time at the Methodist Hospital campus in Merrillville.

Mammograms offered to underprivileged women

MUNSTER | Franciscan Healthcare-Munster received a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust to provide a limited amount of free mammograms for medically underserved Hoosier women.

Screenings are done at Franciscan Hammond Clinic Specialty Center, 7905 Calumet Ave.

To qualify, the patient must be an uninsured Indiana resident.

The funds for the grant are achieved through the sales of breast cancer awareness specialty license plates.

Urologist joins physician group

VALPARAISO | Porter Health Care System welcomes urologist Dr. Robert Lai to the hospital’s network, Porter Physician Group.

He joins fellow urologists Dr. Adam Perlmutter and Dr. John Lynam in practice at Lakeshore Urology. The group has offices in Valparaiso, Portage, Knox, LaPorte and Plymouth. 

Lai is a board certified urologist and graduate of McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Toronto.

5K to benefit animal rescue group

VALPARAISO | Porter Health Care System will present the Healthy Hustle 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. June 7 at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, 775 Meridian Road.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Lakeshore PAWS. The entry fee for the 5K run and noncompetitive 5K walk is $20.

Short sleeve T-shirts are guaranteed to registrations received on or before May 26.

Race day registration is $25. Registrations postmarked after May 26 will be considered late and returned to sender for race day registration.
