This week, Valparaiso residents get a new one-stop-shop option for buying everything from clothes to bedding to electronics to vitamins to a gallon of milk.
Meijer is opening its new 195,000-square-foot big-box store, with a full grocery department, garden center and pharmacy, at 9 a.m. Thursday.
The new supercenter is at 407 Porters Vale Blvd. in the Porter's Vale shopping center at Ind. 49 and Ind. 2. It is the Grand Rapids-based retailer's 39th store in Indiana.
Meijer will be the largest store in a shopping center that's also home to Dick's Sporting Goods, J.C. Penney, Gordmans, Hobby Lobby and Cinemark.
Meijer, which has stores in Highland, Merrillville, Portage, Michigan City and Flossmoor, plans to open six more across the Midwest this year.
Its new Valparaiso location cost $20 million and will employ 300 workers. The gas station outside opened last month.
The Meijer will compete with more established Valparaiso retailers such as Strack & Van Til, Town & Country, ALDI, Target and Walmart.
