Portillo's rolls out home delivery, but not in Merrillville yet

Portillo's in Merrillville.

Lines wrap so far around Portillo's that workers stand outside amid the rows of cars handing out menus and taking orders.

But the popular Chicago-style fast-casual restaurant is making it easier to snag its hog dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, beef-n-sausages, char-broiled chicken sandwiches and cake shakes.

Portillo's partnered with DoorDash to offer home delivery of orders of at least $15. The Portillo's on U.S. 30 in Merrillville is not immediately offering the service, however, because DoorDash isn't established there yet.

“Portillo’s is looking to add delivery to the Merrillville location as quickly as possible, but we don’t have an expected date at this time," Portillo’s VP of Marketing and Public Relations Nicholas Scrarpino said. "We chose to partner with national delivery partner DoorDash and there are some cities throughout the US that they don’t service yet. Merrillville is one of them. We are working with DoorDash to add coverage in Merrillville as soon as possible."

However, residents in west Lake County can get Portillo's delivered. The Portillo's at 17500 Halsted St. in Homewood, which is about 6.5 miles from the state line, is delivering within a 30-minute drive, a range that includes Munster, Dyer, Hammond and at least parts of Highland, Griffith, Schererville and St. John.

People can order Portillo's from Homewood using the Portillo's and DoorDash websites or apps.

“Our new delivery offering continues the tradition of innovation set forward by our company’s founder Dick Portillo,” Portillo's CEO Keith Kinsey said. “From our unique ordering system, to our double drive-thru lanes staffed with outside employees, Portillo’s has consistently innovated our systems to provide our guests with convenient ways to enjoy our iconic menu items. It was important that we partner with a company that could support Portillo’s high-volume restaurants, especially through our lunch and dinner service. DoorDash gives us flexibility and reliability to give our customers the convenience they want and the quality they have come to expect from Portillo’s. We are thrilled to roll out this service at locations nationwide.”

A total of 49 Portillo's locations now offer home delivery, which incurs a $5 delivery fee.

“For more than four years, DoorDash has prided itself in forming partnerships with the best restaurants in every city. Today we are proud to add another top restaurant to our platform by working with Portillo’s, a Chicagoland staple, to power their delivery across the country,” DoorDash Head of Business Development Toby Espinosa said. “As part of the partnership we have also expanded DoorDash’s footprint into 13 new cities, to ensure even more customers can order delivery from their favorite restaurants like Portillo’s.”
