St. John Quiznos to close

The St. John Quiznos will close at the end of the month.

The St. John Quiznos is closing after more than 11 years of dishing out toasted subs and neighborly charm.

Franchisee Debbie Kelleher said the restaurant at the Walgreens Center at 9270 Wicker Ave. will close Sept. 26. It will hold a customer appreciation event this Saturday and Sunday.

“Wow, what a journey it has been over the past 11 and a half years!” she wrote in a Facebook post. “We want to thank each and everyone of you for your friendship, loyalty and patronage since opening our doors in March 2005.”

Denver-based Quiznos, known for its toasted subs and quirky ads, has been struggling. It closed hundreds of stores during the Great Recession, filed for bankruptcy in 2014 and has faced lawsuits from unhappy franchisees.

Only eight Quiznos locations remain in Indiana, including one in Valparaiso and one in Wheatfield. In Northwest Indiana, Quiznos faced increased competition from new sub shops, including Jersey Mikes, Which Wich, and Potbelly’s.
