HIGHLAND – Strack & Van Til, the Region's largest supermarket chain, found its curbside pickup with Instacart to be such a hit that it's extending it to eight more stores.
Since June, customers have been able to order groceries online and pick them up when they pull up to the curb at the Schererville supermarket at 1515 U.S. 41.
Strack & Van Til and Instacart have decided to expand the service to the Strack & Van Til locations in Chesterton, Crown Point and Cedar Lake, Ultra Foods groceries in Downers Grove, Wheaton, Highland and Joliet, and a Town & Country in Valparaiso.
"Convenience is an important aspect of grocery shopping for many customers," Strack & Van Til CEO Jeff Strack said. "Being able to provide our customers the option to order groceries online and enjoy curbside pickup helps make a trip to the grocery store a little faster and easier. Best of all the service is very affordable."
Instacart has a minimum order size of $10, and the fee for curbside pickup is $1.99 for orders over $35 and $5.99 for orders between $10 and $34.99.
Meijer and Whole Foods offer curbside pickup service in other parts of the nation, but Strack & Van Til is believed to be the first to roll it out in the Calumet Region.
Customers order items they want online, and store employees pick them off the shelves, pack them, check them out and have them waiting outside at the time the customer schedules.
Highland-based Strack & Van Til operates 37 stores in two states. Company officials said they would consider expanding the service to additional stores in markets where there was enough demand.
The first pickup is free, and Instacart is offering $10 rewards for referrals.
