General Motors is the latest to join the compact cargo van segment with the 2015 Chevrolet City Express.
City Express LS and LT models carry two occupants and bulk freight to a maximum 1500 pound payload capacity.
Interior cargo walls are shipped clear of obstructions, ideally suited for custom up-fit storage applications.
Recently, I put Chevrolet’s City Express LT to work with a hauling need from a local garden center where I loaded 32 bags of lawn care material into its cargo hold for a total payload of 1360 pounds - including me.
Dual sliding side doors open flush with the body to safely load material when parked at a curb. Upright rear doors open 90- or 180-degrees for a 50-inch wide low lift-over access to the flat load floor.
A durable vinyl floor covering prevents scratches and provides easy cleanup. Reinforced mounts, floor hooks and cargo bay lamp are provided.
Front cloth bucket seats meet day-long comfort needs with 8-way manual seat adjustments for the driver. Head room is exceptional.
Power windows and door locks, cruise control, rear parking sensors, driver information center, keyless entry and 12-volt cargo bay power outlet are standard on LT.
A mobile office center console, map light and fold down passenger seatback with under seat tray creates a convenient flat work space in the cab.
Navigation, Bluetooth, USB port and rear vision camera come with an optional Technology Package for $945.
City Express is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 131 horsepower to the front-wheels managed by a continuously variable automatic transmission.
As expected, my near maximum payload rendered the small engine sluggish under acceleration.
Unladen, the power is brisk and responsive with fuel economy that yields 25 miles per gallon/city and 26 mpg/highway.
Standard anti-lock brakes are reassuring and very effective under all load conditions.
The 2015 Chevrolet City Express carries big cargo in a small package priced at $21,995 for LS and $23,515 for the content enhanced LT model. Add $995 for freight.
