Genesis continues to evolve into the luxury sedan market as the stand alone Premium Vehicle Brand for Korean automaker, Hyundai.
First introduced in 2008, Genesis rolls into its second generation with the introduction of the G80 and G90 sedans to initiate Hyundai’s newly conceived Genesis luxury-brand division.
For 2018, Genesis G80 adds a Sport model with a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, radical design and other appearance enhancements that give this G80 a “bad boy” demeanor.
I tested the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport with all-wheel drive through suburban Chicago and across our region.
A new 3.3-liter V-6 delivers 365 horsepower to find the sweet spot between G80’s carry-over 3.8L V-6 with 311-hp and 5.0L V-8 that generates 420-hp.
Genesis G80 Sport creates a nice balance with its horsepower, AWD and 8-speed automatic transmission for exceptional day-to-day driving pleasure punctuated by occasional accelerator exercise on the Interstate.
G80 Sport has an Intelligent Drive Mode that adapts the suspension to various comfort and performance postures.
For the purpose of review, I placed the G80 into Sport mode that alters the throttle response, shift points, steering feel and exhaust note.
Acceleration is exceptional off the line and when passing with power that quickly reaches the speed limit. Using a prudent throttle and ECO mode delivers 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 17-mpg around town.
G80 Sport’s road manners are very compliant, offering a smooth ride quality, all-wheel grip and good road surface absorption to soothe the daily commute for driver and three adult passengers. The rear seat comes belted for three riders.
Genesis G80’s interior space is roomy and nicely appointed with soft touch materials that surround the cabin. Fit and finish is superb. So is the leg and headroom front to back.
Seats are nicely cushioned and attractively set in contrasting two-tone leather upholstery. However, they lack sufficient side bolster support for spirited driving.
G80 Sport comes complete from the factory with a laundry list of provided safety, comfort and technology features priced at $58,725 including freight.
The 2018 Genesis G80 Sport is built in Ulsan, Korea, and carries an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for crash protection by the U.S. Government.
