HAMMOND — Former NBA player Terry Cummings was one of the guests at Lew Wallace Elementary School's Black History program. "We would like to thank former NBA basketball player Terry Cummings for taking time to celebrate Black History Month with students at Lew Wallace Elementary School in Hammond. He is the nephew of staff member Mary Thomas." 

Preschool Round-up

EAST CHICAGO — The East Chicago Public Library is happy to announce a Preschool Round-Up at the Robert A. Pastrick Branch from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1008 W. Chicago Ave. in East Chicago. A second Preschool Round-Up will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. April 27 at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive in East Chicago.

The round-up is an opportunity for parents to meet preschool teachers from the local area preschools and to learn about their programs.  While the parents are with the preschool teachers, preschoolers are invited to participate in a Story time complete with stories, crafts, and other activities.

Parents will also have an opportunity to learn about the importance of reading aloud to their children. Preschoolers and their parents will be invited to join a special reading program entitled “1,000 Books to Read Before Kindergarten.”

PHS’s Business Professional of America has success in Indianapolis

PORTAGE — Last month, 17 students traveled down to Indianapolis to compete in the next stage of competition. These same students qualified to go to state back in December when Portage High School hosted Region competition.

Chris Shafer placed second in SQL Database applications along with placing second in Java Programming. Cruz Rosales placed sixth in C++ programming. Sanja Kirova placed seventh in C++ programming and 11th in Desktop publishing. Nate Partin placed 11th in Advanced Word Processing along with formally being named Region 1 President for the next school year.

The next stop for seniors Chris Shafer and Cruz Rosales is national competition which will be held in Orlando, Florida in May.
