Purdue Northwest to stage 'Radio Noir Double Feature’

Canterbury Theatre in Michigan City will host “Radio Noir Double Feature.”

You can experience two of the most classic radio dramas of all time in person at a Michigan City theater next weekend.

Purdue University Northwest students, faculty and alumni are staging “The War of the Worlds” and “The 39 Steps” at the Canterbury Theatre, 807 Franklin St., Michigan City, starting next Friday. The “Radio Noir Double Feature” will run from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.

Actors will perform the radio dramas as though in a 1940s radio station in front of a live studio audience. Most of the cast and crew hails from LaPorte and Porter counties.

PNW adapted for the stage “The War of the Worlds,” a tale of alien invasion that infamously duped the radio-listening masses into thinking it was real, and “The 39 Steps,” Alfred Hitchcock’s spy story filled with “red herrings, dark humor and light murder.”

FYI: The “Radio Noir Double Feature” will be performed at the Canterbury at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, and at 3 p.m. on Oct. 2. The final performance takes place in the Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 02 at the Purdue University Northwest Westville campus, 1401 S. U.S. 421. Tickets are $5 for students or $10 for adults at the Canterbury, and “pay-what-you-can” on campus.
