STUDENT VOICES: Vibrations Health, Wellness and Juice Bar offers healthy food in Gary

GARY — Looking for a healthy place to grab a meal? Gary has a new spot for you to check out.

Located at 615 S. Lake St. in the Miller Beach area of Gary, Vibrations Health, Wellness, and Juice Bar is a new addition to the community. Since opening in December, the business has an improved menu with new health food products added.

“We’re a growing business,” owner Rebecca Raspberry said. “We started with half a juice bar, which we thought was whole, until we realized that wasn’t going to do it. So we added another one a few months later.”

Vibrations offers fruit and vegetable juices with a variety of options. You may even add extras such as bee pollen, cod liver oil, flax seed, ginger and more.

In April, Raspberry saw a need for healthy food options and expanded the menu beyond juices and smoothies. Among the additions are chicken salad, avocado toast and spinach pie.

The store also sells natural soaps, body whips, pure honey, essential oils and gluten-free snacks.

The customer base and inventory have also increased over time.

“We pull from Gary definitely," Raspberry said. "We’re starting to get customers from Chesterton, Valparaiso, Merrillville and Crown Point. What I see a lot is people traveling from Chicago to Michigan are googling for healthy options. Where are they gonna go? It’s going to send them to the closest one to the expressway, which is us.”

Raspberry was raised in the health industry. She spent 14 years working at her father’s health food store — House of Gandhi in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago — and couldn't help but smile when talking about her own venture in Gary.

She hopes to serve the community for as long as possible by teaching and offering alternatives.

“My favorite thing about working here is the opportunity to help people," she said. "They come in all the time and say, ‘I need this. I’m feeling this way. Alright doc, fix me up!’”

One employee, 20-year-old Kayla Jenkins, said “It’s a nice environment, and a calming atmosphere. The customers are nice. Rebecca is awesome, and I’m so thankful to work here.”

Although Raspberry couldn’t decide on her all-time favorite juice, she chose one for the day: “Today it's Strawberry Spice. Strawberries, dates, banana, cayenne pepper and hemp milk. So it’s sweet and spicy at the same time.”

She also added that it’s an energy and metabolism booster, while strawberries are good for eyes and hemp milk is great protein.
