'The Sleeper' is a shocker

“The Sleeper” is playwright Catherine Butterfield’s 90-minute “comedy about terrorism” (to quote the 2006 Variety review). A suburban housewife battles to be relevant in the shadow of her husband’s business, her sister’s acting career and the every day challenges of having children in a society on high alert. Throw in an affair with a mysterious tutor and you have “The Sleeper.” Stick around for the surprise ending — it’s a shocker! Directed for Beatniks on Conkey by Bonnie and Rip Johnson and running June 2 through 11. 219/852-0484 or www.beatniksonconkey.com

The Dunes on Display

Carrying on a long tradition of painting outdoors in natural light, the Duneland Plein Air painters meet in various settings to paint in the open air. The artists record their impressions on beaches and in gardens, everywhere from Beverly Shores to West Beach, Michigan City, LaPorte, South Bend and Niles. A collection of current work can be seen at the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University through Aug. 6. The exhibit is free. 219/464-5365 or www.valpo.edu/brauer-museum-of-art
