The Erie Lackawanna Trail has been called "the backbone of Northwest Indiana."
Stretching from Hammond to Crown Point, the former railroad line carries joggers, cyclists and those just out for a stroll through downtown Highland.
Highland plans to celebrate the popular trail with its 2017 Highland Festival of the Trail this weekend. The festival takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday along a stretch of the Erie Lackawanna on Jewett Street from Kennedy Avenue to 4th Street.

Highland businesses such as Promise You Art House, The Annex and Tiger Plumbing will be among the 29 artist and commercial vendors at the free fest, staged annually by Highland Main Street and the Highland Redevelopment Commission. Zandstra's Farm and Greenhouse also will host a small farmers market.
This year's themes are art and fitness. There will be a fun run, tricycle races, sidewalk poetry, live music, and poetry readings at the murals on Jewett Street.
Visitors downtown also can check out the Highland Fire Department's annual open house on Highway Avenue and 4th Street.
