Highland novelist to headline Steel Pen Creative Writers' Conference

Fair Oaks Farms will again host Steel Pen Creative Writers' Conference.

Michael Poore, the acclaimed novelist from Highland who wrote "Up Jumped the Devil" and "Reincarnation Blues," will headline this year's Steel Pen Creative Writers' Conference.

The Asimov Readers' Award-winning novelist will give the keynote address at the day-long conference for local literary writers. It will take place Oct. 27 at Fair Oaks Farms Conference Center on Interstate 65 just north of Rensselaer.

Writers, poets, playwrights and anyone else interested can hear lectures from a number of authors, including Nicole Amsler, Tiffany T. Cole, Shannon Anderson, Janine Harrison, Kaitlyn Johnson, Lauren Mallett, Rod Martinez, Karen Schubert, Carla Lee Suson and Patricia Skalka. Guest speakers will address a number of subjects such as science fiction, crafting a successful series, developing characters, how to write dialogue, finding the right copy editor, and creating an effective marketing strategy.

The "Move Your Body to Move Your Reader: Physical Ritual & Writing Practice" breakout session for instance will cover how Dickens walked, Murakami runs, and other routine physical activity writers get to stay sharp.
