Period pieces are where we always tend to turn when it comes to Costume Design. And this year, it's pretty hard to pick against a film that literally centers around ... costume design. Mark Bridges is nominated for "Phantom Thread," the story of a dressmaker in the 1950s played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Bridges won several years ago for "The Artist," as well. Jacqueline Durran could play spoiler for "Beauty and the Beast," though. She's a past winner, as well, for "Anna Karenina." Kudos to "Victoria & Abdul" (a fantastic film probably not recognized enough this year) and "Wonder" for their nominations, but Makeup and Hairstyling is going to "Darkest Hour" for turning Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill. Lock it up.
