Photographer who's exhibited internationally to speak at ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen

ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen in Gary will host photographer Gus Powell.

A renowned photographer who's exhibited internationally and been published in The New Yorker magazine will speak Friday in downtown Gary.

Gus Powell will talk about his work and experience photographing Bloomberg Philanthropies' Public Art Project, which is currently on view at ArtHouse, 411 E. Fifth Ave. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 1 p.m.

"Gus Powell is an established photographer; his work has been exhibited internationally including a solo show at The Museum of The City of New York; and group exhibitions at The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and FOAM, NL," Arthouse said in a news release. "His photographs have been published in Aperture, Harpers, Vogue, Wired, Fortune, W, and The New Yorker magazine."

Conceived of by renowned South Side Chicago artist Theaster Gates and funded by New York City's Bloomberg Philanthropies, ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen is a culinary incubator/art gallery/commercial kitchen for rent across from the U.S. Steel Yard that seeks to be "a platform for economic and artistic activity in the downtown area." It's also a public gathering place that hosts frequent events, such as cooking demonstrations, film screenings, classes and a game night.
