Towle Theater is set up for its "Fun Home" production.

The Tony Award-winning play "Fun Home", an adaption of cartoonist Alison Bechdel's acclaimed graphic memoir "Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic," will bring coming-of-age drama and humor to The Towle Theater in Hammond next month.

Towle Theater Managing Director Jeff Casey will direct the winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical, which was written by Lisa Kron, Jeanine Tesori and Bechdel herself.

Bechdel, a MacAurthur genius grant-winning pioneer in indie comics, is known for her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and the Bechdel Test for movies, which assesses whether they feature two female characters talking with each other at any point about anything other than a man.

Bechdel broke through into pop culture a few years ago with the runaway success of the "Fun Home" musical, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and that won Best Musical - New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Obie Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Off-Broadway Alliance Award.

"With that success, it is no wonder that the Towle Theater has decided to produce 'Fun Home' in their 15th season," the downtown Hammond theater said in a press release. "The musical is based on the autobiography of graphic novelist, Alison Bechdel. When her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. 'Fun Home' is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes."

The play stars Meghan Hoyt, Nicole Baker, Stella Hoyt, Heather Clark, Gino Generelli, Lewis Rawlinson, Rebecca Buechel, Jack Lopez and Derek Diehl.

The Towle billed its staging of "Fun Home," which was recently performed at the Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, as the musical's Indiana debut, but was beat out by the Cardinal Stage Company in Bloomington, which started its run of "Fun Home" last week. The 2015 Tony winner won't be staged in Indianapolis until September.

"Fun Home" will run at the Towle at 5205 Hohman Avenue in downtown Hammond at 2 p.m. on Sundays and 8 p.m. on all other nights from July 14-15, 19-22, 26-29, with tickets going for $19. The theater has draconian seating policies so theater-goers should show up early or risk being turned away without a refund.
