Valparaiso International Film Festival screens world cinema

Valparaiso University will host the International Film Festival at Valparaiso University.

It's not necessary to head up to some arthouse in Chicago to see the latest in world cinema.

The International Film Festival at Valparaiso University — sponsored by the foreign languages and literatures department and the Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center — is showing movies from around the globe throughout this academic year. Professors at the private university at 1700 Chapel Drive on U.S. 30 in Valpo will lead discussions to deepen viewers' understanding at the Friday evening screenings, which are all free and open to the public.

Here's a look at what's playing this year:

• “Orfeu negro — Black Orpheus,” a 1959 Brazil film that will screen at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, in Christopher Center room 205 and be followed by a discussion led by Allannah Karas, assistant professor of foreign languages and literatures.

• “Frantz,” a 2016 movie straight out of France and Germany that will play at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in Neils Science Center room 234 with a talk by Kade-Duesenberg German House and Cultural Center Director Timothy Malchow, who is also an associate professor of foreign languages and literatures at the university.
