GARY — An arson investigation is underway after fire crews battled a 60-car blaze Friday night at a recycled auto parts lot in the city’s Black Oak section.

The Gary Fire Department responded 8:25 p.m. Friday to I-80 Auto Parts, 3349 Burr St., for a report of a vehicle fire, spokesman Mark  Jones said, but crews quickly learned multiple vehicles had been set ablaze.

Crews were on scene for about three hours Friday night, he said. A payload operator moved vehicles out of the path of the fire to allow crews access. The fire was located near the rear of the business, Jones said.

The vehicle fires appear to have been an act of arson, but Jones said the cause remains under investigation.

Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield did not immediately have additional information about the incident Tuesday afternoon.
