MERRILLVILLE, IN - Kenneth J. Welches, 66, passed away on July 10, 2018, in Merrillville, IN. Kenneth was born on April 4, 1952, to Doris (nee McQuirter) and Forest J. Welches in Gary, IN. He worked at the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway for 31 years as a switchman. He practiced and taught taxidermy at Purdue University Calumet, now Purdue University Northwest. He owned his own taxidermy business in Kouts, IN. He loved art and painted nature landscapes in his free time and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his children: Jennifer and Amber; sibling: Dennis (Debra) Welches; eight grandchildren: Amanda Biro, Ashley Biro, Alayna Biro, Sara Biro, Cody Biro, Alyssa Kowal, Eric Kowal and Justin Fowler; one great-grandchild: Ashton Leeth; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Debra; mother, Doris; father, Forest; and brother, Darrell.
Friends are invited to visit from 3:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 15, 2018, at CALUMET PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL, 7535 Taft St., Merrillville, IN. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will take place in Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Jennifer Biro in care of the CALUMET PARK FUNERAL CHAPEL.
