CROWN POINT, IN - Mary Ann Sanko of Crown Point, age 76, passed away November 6, 2018, peacefully at a friend's home in Crown Point. She was born on Oct 25, 1942, to John and Ann (Jakelich) Sanko in Gary, IN. However, the two most important people in her life who raised, loved, and nurtured her were her grandmother Manda Jakelich and her auntMary Haviland. They raised her to become the independent woman that she was. Mary Ann loved life and cherished every moment on this earth.
She was preceded in death by her father John Sanko, mother Ann Powers, grandmother Manda Jakelich, grandfather George Jakelich, aunts Mary Haviland and Martha Wood, and uncles Marton, Thomas, and Julius Jakelich. She is survived by her uncle Ralph Wood and aunt Evelyn Jakelich and many dear friends. She now finds herself in heaven with her beloved pets, Gracie and Tasha.
Mary Ann was a devout Roman Catholic who attended St. Mark's Catholic School and was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School and a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church in Crown Point. She was an avid Notre Dame fan and believed in the power of the Irish. She worked for the Lake County Government Center for over 40 years mostly in the Auditor's Office. She was a die-hard liberal democrat who supported women's and children's rights. She even ensured that she voted in this last election by absentee ballot even though she was gravely ill. Mary Ann was extremely proud of the fact that she met both Bill and Hillary Clinton several times and had them autograph their books. However, her fondest political memory was working on the Presidential Campaign of Robert F. Kennedy before he was assassinated.
Mary Ann will be greatly missed by her many friends who she called her family. Some of them include: April Godra, Carla and Donald Good, Sharon Fleming, Lisa Garrett, Niki Radford, Rhonda Divine, Gabby and Brian Flaherty, Kim Paulauski, Maria 'Binky' McCabe, Madeline Haynes, Lorie Akers and Sherry Gilliam. She was also very fond of one of her young neighbors, Bradley Church who is also a Notre Dame fan. As Mary Ann used to say 'I'm so glad we had this time together.'
There will be a private service for Mary Ann. Donations may be made to Harbor Light Hospice at 1229 Arrowhead Court, Crown Point, IN 46307 or St. Mathias Church in Crown Point.
