Shoppers survey the offerings at Chesterton's European Market. The market opened for its 13th season the first weekend in May. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through the end of October. The market is located at the corner of Broadway and Third Street next to Thomas Centennial Park in downtown Chesterton.

Music Heritage Series at the National Lakeshore, 7:30 - 9 p.m., third Friday of the month, Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, 1215 N. State Road 49 in Porter. “Lost to Time: Duneland Ghost Towns,” special exhibit at Westchester Township History Museum, 700 W. Porter Ave., Chesterton. Dunes Glamping weekend, June 6 and 7, Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N. 25E in Chesterton. Indiana Dunes State Park will offer another special themed weekend to explore the natural and cultural resources in the dunes from a woman's perspective. Summer Safety Fest, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday June 12, Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive in Porter. For kids of all ages, the event features interactive activities and demonstrations led by Porter police department members and the Porter Fire Search and Rescue team. Activities include: K-9 demonstrations, dunk-a-police-officer dunk tank and ambulance and tactical vehicle tours as well as “stranger danger” and “Be the Exception” presentations. A 1980s-based event fundraiser benefiting the Burns Harbor Parks Department children’s programs while also preserving and upgrading its properties. Fireworks on the Lakefront, Wednesday July 1, activities at 6 p.m. and fireworks begin at dusk, Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N. 25E in Chesterton. Family-friendly event features food merchants, a live rock concert and fireworks. Bus transfers will be available between Yost Elementary School and Chesterton Intermediate School to Porter Beach. Transfers will begin at 5 p.m. and continue until 7:30 p.m. The last transfer after the fireworks will leave Porter Beach at 11 p.m. Inclement weather or high winds would bump back the event to the following day. Family 4th Fest, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday July 4 at Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Drive in Porter. Parade steps off at 9 a.m. at Yost Elementary School and ends in the park. Concert festival that supports Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club as well as Chesterton native’s global foundation, See Change Foundation. The event’s name, Babapaloosa, is derived from “baba,” which is grandfather in Nepalese.
