SCHERERVILLE | If you're the kind of person who likes to eat dessert first, you may love the Banana Crumble French Toast at the newly opened and kitschy Toast & Jam cafe.

Kicking off the day with a dish that is so decadent feels bad but it tastes so good.

Two layers of banana bread are covered with sauteed bananas, baked with a candied pecan crumble, drizzled with caramel sauce and then torched.

I had a difficult time sharing with my husband, who ordered a more savory — and healthier — dish: the Chicken Omelet. Three eggs are served up with grilled chicken, fresh broccoli, Roma tomatoes and provolone cheese. All omelets are served with hash browns and toast or pancakes. Tasty, but it lacks the sugar needed for this sweet-breakfast lover.

The portion sizes are good but not so huge that you'd need a nap afterward.

Toast & Jam, which also serves up some unique dishes for lunch, is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. It's at 7311 Mallard Lane, Schererville. For more information, call (219) 769-0000 or visit toastandjamcafe.com.
