I can’t believe snow on Halloween? Now, as most of you know, I love snow; wind, not so much. Halloween was frightfully, scary weather wise this year but as all great Northwest Indiana inhabitants will attest, give it a day and it will change.
Certainly, a winter coat was a necessary item for the Halloween tricks or treats on Friday but I wonder how many kids just didn’t go out because of the scary and cold circumstances.
In some households a winter coat is still a luxury but this Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. there will be a free Winter Coat Giveaway at Portage Christian Church, 5880 Evergreen Ave. The giveaway is a partnership between the church and Northshore Health Centers and is open to the public. There will be one free coat per adult and child while supplies last.
Giving the gift of warmth is a wonderful thing, especially with the winter that is predicted for our area again.
Next up, we talk turkey; 500 Turkeys that is. In 2009, the group -- 500 Turkeys -- said God inspired a mission to provide an entire Thanksgiving meal for a family of four that they could cook at home. Their mission is to gather enough food and raise funds to feed at least 500 families for Thanksgiving and positively touch as many lives as possible by showing Christ in action.
With more than 500 volunteers and trust in God, 500 turkeys was able to provide the food necessary for 500 turkey dinners plus $5 for each family.
In 2010, through the effort of the volunteers, they were able to again raise enough money for another 500 meals. In 2011, they increased their side items to two of each plus the 500 Turkeys. In 2012, the bar was raised to feeding nearly 600 families and in 2013, the goal to feed 700-plus families was met with the grace of God and support of the community.
This year, 500 Turkeys hopes to help 800 families. If you want a small part in helping the cause, you can sponsor a turkey for $10 or you can attend a great fundraiser and have some fun too, right here in Portage.
Join the fun at Clancy’s Public House, 2542 Portage Mall, for a Pasta and Painting Party to benefit 500 Turkeys at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13. The cost is $40 a person and you must be 21 to participate. The price includes your pasta and salad dinner and your supplies to create a beautiful painting. Dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. and painting begins at 6 p.m. Drinks are available for purchase. Just remember you must register for this event online at www.eventbrite.com/e/pasta-painting-tickets-13276846405 to reserve your spot. No refunds will be given for this fundraiser as it will become a donation to 500 Turkeys.
Come on out and eat some great pasta, get creative and help a great cause.
