Indiana Academic All Stars

Seven local students from Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties are among 40 students who have been named Indiana Academic All-Stars through a program of the Indiana Association of School Principals.

Those students are Kathryn Strimbu, Andrean High School, Merrillville; Zack Fattore, Hobart High School, Hobart; Nolan Poczekay, Chesterton High School, Chesterton; Andrew Recker, Valparaiso High School, Valparaiso; Hannah Richards, Morgan Township Middle/High School, Valparaiso; Megan Ritter, Crown Point High School, Crown Point; and Olivia Dybing, LaLumiere School, LaPorte.

An additional three local students were named 2018 Regional All-Stars. They are Alan Wright, Lake Central High School, St. John; Robert Walker, Washington Township Middle/Senior High School, Valparaiso; and Thomas Gotsch, Marquette Catholic High School, Michigan City.

Andrean's Strimbu also won a scholarship through the Indiana Association of School Principals Academic based on her involvement and achievements in IASP-sponsored academic competitions.

Each Indiana high school was invited to recognize one high school senior based on their academic achievement and extracurricular activities. A statewide committee met in March and 40 individuals were recognized as Indiana Academic All-Stars.

The students were honored at the 32nd annual Recognition Ceremony on April 27 in Indianapolis.

Schools were directed to select nominees based on several items, including the following criteria: a mathematical formula that combines a student's SAT/ACT composite score and grade point average for seven semesters; extracurricular activities related to academics, non-academic extracurricular activities and leadership, community service and involvement.

The Indiana Association of School Principals' Indiana Academic All-Stars program, now in its 32nd year, is open to all high schools accredited by the Indiana Department of Education.
